N.d. Color woodblock, 7″ x 10″. Framed in No. 14 CV—Scallops—3/4″ in walnut (Silver-Grey stain).
William Rice was one of California’s greatest print-makers and art teachers. The strong but somewhat loose line work had to be echoed by the frame. I also like the way this frame design — flat with a portion carved back — mimics block prints themselves. The scallop detail—a particularly useful and versatile but just one of an infinite number of possible patterns—echoes the feathers. A very charming print and a pleasure to frame!
