1940’s. Watercolor, ca. 20″ x 14″. Framed in No. 443 CV—3″ in walnut (Nut Brown stain).
Perhaps my favorite from a show of Stevens’s work we framed for North Point Gallery in San Francisco in 2011. The trick in framing these was striking the balance between formality (that of the subjects) and looseness (characterizing the painting style) that makes these works so charming. In this case we tried to get just enough form to the frame to be consistent with the turret on the house, but also keep it appropriately free and hand-made by carving the wood.
