Marion Kavanagh Wachtel (1875–1954), (California landscape)

n.d. Watercolor, 11” x 13”.  Framed in No. 15.14 CV Stopped Flute—1” wide, in quartersawn white oak (Nut Brown stain).

This watercolor is delicate enough to have pushed me to mat it rather than frame it close. White mats are commonly used on pieces like this, but are usually the wrong choice. Believed to be “safe,” they’re not, white being at the extreme end of the value spectrum. This grey is suited to the picture’s values and hues. I added a sepia ink line for definition. The frame is, of course, oak, and hand carved to echo the free gesture of the artist’s stroke, with a stopped flute to articulate the corners.
