Contemporary. Porcelain, 8″ x 8″. Framed in Century Flat No. 180—2-3/4″ in quartersawn white oak (Medieval Oak stain).
This flat with a raised bead at the outside is as basic and economical as possible, yet alive to its charge. (Details on the #180, here.) It simply features beautiful ray flake in the wood, a harmonious and complementary color (matching the shadows in the image), and one formal element echoing the background element of the branches (a background to the flowers). Because the pattern on the tile goes out to the very edge, we exposed all four sides by floating it in the frame opening with just a 1/8″ gap between the tile and sight edge of the frame. (It’s adhered to a board with archival adhesive.)
