Geoffrey Agrons, “South Meadows”

2009. Photograph, 11″ x 15″. Framed in No. 143 “Hudson”—3” in walnut with Nut Brown stain.

One of our most popular and versatile frames, I like the plainness and breadth of the profile, and the soft forms at the outside, as a harmonious accompaniment to a very quiet picture. (More on the Hudson here.) Might have gone with a slope, given the lines of the shore on the right and the perspective, but the still, flat water and relatively shallow depth of field argued for the flat. When framing close, the frame has to be just right, with nothing superfluous — in this case still, soft and plain is what was called for.
