Carl Sammons (California, 1886-1968), (Grand Canyon)

n.d. Pastel on paper, 10″ x 14″. Framed in Compound Mitered frame No. 16 CV + Cap-16 CV (3″ total width) in quartersawn white oak (Oxford Oak stain).

What I was after with this piece was sustaining in the frame the dramatic combination of flat forms with steep rugged drops. The form of the frame always takes its cue from the forms depicted in the picture. We’d had recent success with this frame, having designed it for a Dice Tsutsumi piece for the gallery. For color, we settled on a darker shade of the characteristic color of the famed Canyon’s rock.
