Bertha Lum (California, 1869 – 1954), “Chinese Hat”

1924. Linoleum block print, ca. 4” x 10” image. Matted and framed in hand carved No. 15 CV Stops (curved) – ½”, in walnut (Black Wash).

When a customer brought in this lovely piece by one of California’s most notable early print-makers, we’d been making the No. 14 CV Stops for a while, so we adapted it to this print by shaping stops with the curved form. To suit the tall, narrow format of the print, we also adjusted their distance from the corners. Used walnut for its soft, muted tone (further muting it with a black wash), which harmonizes well with the soft contrasting tones in the print.
