An accomplished landscape painter and Production Designer for Pixar Animation Studios, Bill Cone has made hundreds of pastel painting studies for films and taught classes on lighting and color at Pixar for the last 10+ years and lectured at numerous plein air conventions and art events. On May 16th, 2015 in the Holton Studio Gallery, we had the pleasure of watching Bill develop a pastel painting for a small audience. He presented a slideshow of images from the yearly backpacking trips in the Sierras, which he’s been organizing for the last 10 years with Paul Kratter and a group of local artists. He also brought in his latest work to share with the audience. Bill then shared his sketchbook and answered questions about his materials and techniques before starting his demonstration, in which he created a pastel painting of a riverbed scene. Below is a series of photographs from the event, showing the progression of his painting. Thank you, Bill for the great artist demonstration!
