Thomas Hill (California, 1829-1908), (Sierra scene)

n.d. Oil on board, 13-1/2″ x 20-1/4″. Framed in No. 321 CV—3″ in walnut (Nut Brown stain), with gilt liner.

The loose manner and rustic subject dictated a simple carved frame. For the cool, earthy, muted palette, walnut with a light stain seemed just right. The gilt liner doesn’t so much as dress it up as honor and celebrate it.
