Percy Gray (California, 1869 – 1952), (Mt. Tamalpais)

1918. Watercolor, 16″ x 20″. Framed close in No. 308.2 “Michigan” – 2-5/8″ in stained quartersawn white oak with gilt oak ogee slips.

Two watercolors by early twentieth century California master Percy Gray (1869 – 1952). The top one, showing Mount Tamalpais, was done in 1918, and other one of eucalyptus in the fog is dated 1922. The quiet scoop profile (more on the No. 308.2 “Michigan” here) provides the right amount of perspective and grace, and the fine reeding gives definition to the setting and is in keeping with the fine line work of the paintings. The ogee profile of the gilt slips harmonizes with the gentle curves of the tree forms and soft, gradated light. (See also this watercolor by Sydney Yard…)
