Kevin Courter, “Colusa Sunset”

2009. Oil on linen, 16” x 20”. Framed in Compound Mitered frame No. 14 CV Scallops (special) + Cap No. 813 CV Stops — 4”, in walnut (Medieval stain), with pale gold slip.

This is one of my favorite pieces we’ve done. Kevin’s work is always deeply inspiring, and after deciding to feature this painting in the window for our 2009 show, “A Heaven In the Eye,” I pulled out all the stops on this frame. It’s almost an individualized frame in its specificity to the picture—i.e., it seems not too likely we’d ever make exactly this frame for any other picture—except that the features it takes off from, the clouds and grass (note the fine carved lines on the flat panel near the sight edge) are not unusual in a landscape painting!
