“Waiting for the Tide” (1930)

This print is by Yoshida Hiroshi, for whom we’ve named the Yoshida frame. Born in 1876 he mastered the art of ukiyo-e (woodblock printing), winning widespread recognition in his native Japan as well as in the United States and Europe, and came to be regarded as one of the most important artists in the shin hanga (modern print) movement. First visiting America and Europe in 1899–1901, during which he exhibited extensively, he played a significant role in the popularization and influence of Japanese block printing in early twentieth century western art.
